Work Apron

The use of surplus materials is common practice for us and this limitation comes from a conscious effort to reduce costs and use less where possible. The work we create at Lessons happens around our other jobs and profits go back into the production of new objects or towards exhibitions. Therefore, saving money on materials by using deadstock or remnant fabrics is a small but necessary step, and allows to continue making new work.

This apron has been made from unbleached bull denim offcuts, a hardwearing fabric ideal for workwear. Another constraint when using surplus fabrics is colour choice, which has led us to experiment with natural dyes. The bull denim used here has been dyed in Weld and Oak, then modified using Ferrous Sulphate to achieve a washed charcoal grey. The Apron features an abstract exploded wheat sheaf appliqué, signifying one  raw material used in cooking.
