Zero Waste Benches

Having graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture, I’d lost access to its cheap materials and the workshop space, so to produce new furniture for my flat on a tight budget, outsourced CNC cutting became the only option. Being a cheapskate, I wanted to nest the elements as tightly as possible to get the most out of one sheet, and I ended up with an almost zero-waste cutting pattern. Delivery costs were too high, so I used public transport instead – the form was iterated so the flat-packed pieces would fit within the height of an overground carriage. I borrowed a hand trolley from work, collected the pieces from Walthamstow, and hauled them home to Whitechapel. My boss lent me a leftover can of yacht varnish and an old roller, so I varnished everything in the garden at home. Now I have 3 new benches for our garden used all the time.
