Curl Hooks
With limited access to workshops, I was on the lookout for a material that I could shape without complex machinery or specialist skills. The curl hooks began as scraps of sheet metal nicked from the bin at work. A friend would help me angle grind a notch into each piece before I took them home to hammer into shape in my back garden. I soon learnt of the limits of hammering steel by hand, and so the object morphed from chunky handle to concise key hook, minimising the energy required to free it from flatness. As the project went on, I found a place that could laser cut them for cheap, which allowed me to make more precise versions. I finally sealed the steel with a blowtorch and boiled linseed oil from my grandpa’s old art supplies.
