David Chen (b. Dallas, 2002) is an emerging product designer and creative technologist based in London. Having recently completed a Master's in Design Engineering at Imperial College, he is establishing a strong interdisciplinary practice which explores the intersection between DJ culture and design engineering.
The Alien’s World
A lot of my day-to-day varies between standing up to make stuff and sitting down to do laptop work. My studio space is very small and my speakers are wall-mounted to maximise working space, meaning that music sounds slightly muffled when I sit down. Therefore, I wanted to create a speaker that would sound as good to me standing up as well as sitting down.
I used two £15 work lamps from IKEA and replaced the lights with a 3D printed adapter to hold the Beyma tweeters. The speaker cabinet also features 3D printed brackets that remove the need for any glue, which would be too messy to attempt in my studio. The isolating feet under the cabinets are borrowed from one of my Technics SL-1210MK2 turntables. The photos were taken in my kitchen and the backdrop was a repurposed window roller blind clamped onto my kitchen cabinets.

Listening station wall unit with an integrated Technics, 1210 MK2 turntable and headphone amplifier, shelving module, and BPM (beats per minute) analyser.
The shelving and turntable containment was hand-bent from 0.9mm and 1.2mm stainless steel respectively. The turntable containment was built around the dimensions of a Technics 1210 MK2. The aluminium faceplate of the Technics 1210 MK2 was hand-brushed, removing all original decals.
