Datum Side Table
I designed the ‘Marquetry as a Material’ Datum Side Table as a collaborative project that we could make and sell directly to clients. I worked in our garden, Hannah worked indoors, and we came together outside for the rituals of sanding and oiling. We were limited by needing to find materials that were already machined and dried, usually for an alternative intended purpose. A gate post provided us with the correct diameter of timber, as well as an unexpected textural element, while the bedsheet backdrops allowed the piece to interact with its surroundings. This approach suits us for now. Taking on a commercial space would divert my time outside of my day job and financial resources away from my creative process and production. Similarly, I could pay for professional photography shoots, but I’ve preferred to learn the basics by creating images and compositions that I enjoy.
