150 × 12 Butter Knives
The mild steel used to prototype the ‘150 × 12 Butter Knives’ was part of a previous project which left me with a length of 12mm mild steel tube. This allowed me to experiment more freely without the costs of new materials and before making the final pieces from stainless steel, making them food safe.
The standard press plates on the hydraulic press influenced the design of the knives as they limited what shapes and lines were created. Setting constraints like size and process meant I could change the size, placement and shape of each handle and blade. I welded a screw head to the end of one of the handles as an end cap, with the rest of the screw inside the handle. This added a nice weight to the knives while effectively sealing off the bottom.
