The Stack Stool
Stacked high in local diasporic markets, and found in homes and restaurants, handis carry cultural memory and entangled histories that mark British South Asian experiences.
‘The Stack Stool’ repurposes a handi from Shepherd’s Bush into a stool. Aluminium handis are made from British scrap metal exported to Pakistan to be formed into pots and returned to the UK. In using this material, the stool embodies experiences of ‘in-betweenness’, extending aesthetic codes from the sub-continent through a uniquely British and diasporic lens whilst interrogating place and belonging in contemporary Britain.
